Friday 2 August

Teams arrive from early morning (Shuttle Service from airport)

13:00 - Lunch
14:00 - Beach walk / swim - familiarize yourself with the environment (the accommodation overlooks the sea - a warm Indian Ocean - and 10 minutes walk to the beach).
19:00 - Dinner, official welcome and briefing for the competition
20:30 - Board Meeting (All accompanying adults to attend)

Saturday 3 August

08:00 - Breakfast
08:45 - Briefing for exercise of the day
09:30 - Transport to City Centre: transect of West Street in CBD. Travel to Gateway shopping center 15kms north of Durban to experience the contrasts (decentralization of the city)
13:00 - Lunch at Gateway - visit interactive Science Centre
15:00 - Ramble through mangrove swamps: Mgeni River mouth (not for assessment)
18:00 - Supper
20:00 - Fieldwork test: Theme of decentralization and regional shopping centres

Sunday 4 August

08:00 - Breakfast
09:00 - Test: general geographic knowledge, emphasis on Africa and southern Africa
10:30 - Presentations by teams: 20 minute presentations by each team on the geography of their country or issues or problem. PART 1
12:30 - Lunch
13:30 - Depart for International Conference Centre : Opening of the IGU Conference
14:00 - Entertainment
14:20 - Welcome by Professor Joan Fairhurst, Secretary-General of IGU Regional Conference 2002 Durban
14:30 - International Geographical Union Planet and Humanity Award: presentation to former State President Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela
14:45 - Welcome by Professor Lindisizwe Magi, Chair: South African National Committee of the IGU
14:50 - Keynote address: Professor Anne Buttimer, President of the IGU: Renaissance and re-membering of Geography: pioneering ideas of Alexander von Humboldt 1769-1859
15:20 - Keynote address: Professor Eckard Ehlers, University of Bonn, Germany: Global environmental change and Geography - towards an integration of nature and society
15.40 - Closing remarks: Professor Joan Fairhurst
16:00 - Visit Durban's new waterfront
17:30 - Cocktails at the ICC (Buses leave from ICC to return to Treasure Beach at 19.30)

Monday 5 August

09:00 - Presentations by teams: 20 minute presentations by each team on the geography of their country or issues or problem. PART 2
11:00 - Field observations Durban south: aerial photography and map work. Introduction to the problem: "The implications of relocating Durban's International airport"
13:00 - Lunch
14:30 - Problem solving test (group exercise): the social and physical impacts of relocating Durban's airport
18:00 - Dinner
19:30 - Cultural evening: short items of entertainment to be presented by each team, e.g. dance, song, poem, story, music (emphasis on cultural exchange)

Tuesday 6 August

08:00 - Breakfast
09:00 - Depart for Valley Trust: development, health and environment theme
13:00 - Lunch
14:30 - Final test: field observation - urban/rural contrasts
15:30 - Board Meeting: Assessment of teams
17:30 - Depart for ICC conference center to attend banquet: Winning team announced and certificates/prizes awarded to winning team.

Wednesday 7 August

08:00 - Breakfast
08:30 - Final award ceremony, evaluation and farewells
10:00 - Depart for next destinations (Shuttle service to airport)
